Good English language skills are essential to study in the UK.

All UK universities will ask you for an English language test certificate as part of your application. The level that you need to achieve depends on the test you take and the course and university you are applying for.

All UK universities accept IELTS (International English Language Testing System) as proof of English ability. IELTS is the world’s most popular English language proficiency test for higher education and global migration, accepted by more than 10,000 organisations worldwide. IELTS is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge Assessment English.

Other English language tests are available – check the website of your chosen university, or ask a university representative when you book a one-to-one conversation with them.

The British Council offers a wide range of free preparation materials and resources to prepare for the IELTS test.
